Psalm 27 – Standing tall

God holds me head and shoulders

above all who try to pull me down.

How often do you feel like you are drowning? The struggles and tribulations that surround you are forcing you to swim with all your waning strength and it honestly feels like you can no longer hold your head above the water. Even standing on God’s Word you find yourself on tip toes just trying to keep your nose clean.

How often does it feel as if the world is trying to swallow you up? It tries to draw you in. It seeks to hide you among the unrighteous, to make you one of it’s own. Just as you think you are getting ahead it pulls you back.

How often do you feel like you are walking on quicksand? Going down fast and the more you struggle the deeper in the dwang you get.

Sometimes our biggest problem is that we feel spiritually inadequate.

Somehow inferior. Scared to admit it as we expect the super-spiritual people around us to make stupid comments that put us under condemnation.

David knew it was only God in him that made him able. It is not about you. Not about what you can or can’t do. Not about your faith, your strength, your wisdom, your culture, your heritage.

In fact as long as we in anyway seek to get ahead, or even stay afloat, by any effort of our own we are no different to the crowd around us. Contrary to popular teaching God does not help those who help themselves. He helps those who fully trust and lean and rely upon Him.

Using your opportunities, taking your chances, being in the right place, bending the rules, being an outright crook are just some of the many ways that help those of the world look like they are making it. Yet a pin prick can burst that bubble.

When you are in Christ you are seated with Him in heavenly places. He has picked you up and placed you there. Your point of departure is already above the things of the world. You have direct open access to the Highmost.

When you remain in His Word and His Word in you, you are standing on something that stands above all creation. His promises carry you.

When you let go of the world He snatches you up, keeps you from falling and presents you faultless.

Right now you may think these are just another bunch of worthless words. It is not working for you. Please come away with me. Let us turn our eyes upon Jesus. Let us seek to enter His presence. Experience heaven as we wait upon Him.

As we do we will no longer even feel the weights trying to pull us down but realise that we are head and shoulders above the world.
